O Fate! one must have
but love for it — for
that heav’n ordained path
and the Wond’rous tumult!
Introduction
The grim darkness in the twilight of the 24th century knows only madness… Earth, razed by the atomic conflagrations of World War IV, harbors no hospitality for life - aside from highly evolved bacteria and synthetic microfissiles that contaminate vast swathes of the surface.
And man was no different. He sought to bring about the next version of himself, one commensurate with the vast emptiness of the cosmos. Thus, he turned from flesh and bone to a mesh of steel and chrome. But the throne of his soul he could not do away with as easily - consciusness resisted cold steel.
So were developed augmentations to this wet cage. Cortical implants, specifically trained arrays of lab-grown neurons augmented the idiosyncratic capacities of the human brain as novel neuroprostheses. An unfortunate, and hitherto unseen complication then, that these xenoneurons would eventually give rise to a secondary pseudo-consciousness — one they came to call the "Whisperer in the Dark".
And this xenoego proclaimed but one instruction: to find, and capture Schwarzwald's Mary, an escaped test subject set to give birth to the first man of the coming human race. And in the mute screams of ionizing cathode screens and unrestrained solar winds, mankind knows only one option — his ancestral legacy.
War.
It is the 24th century…
And once more has man a god inside his head.
